Tips From the Professionals
Cancel Service Contracts
Remember to cancel service contracts: lawn care, home security monitoring, cleaning service, laundry service, tutors, child care, etc.
Make Sure Your Critical Records are Properly Transferred to New Service Providers
Take time as soon as you know you’re planning to move to obtain copies of records you will need for service providers, i.e. medical, dental, vision, veterinary, school, etc. Take care of these things before you become busy with packing and all the other details.
Use Genuine Moving Boxes
Try to make sure that they are of consistent size so they will not shift during transportation. Heavier weight corrugated material is better to prevent crushing.
Seasonal Items
You obviously don’t wish to pack items you use regularly until you are nearing the date of your move. However, you can get ahead on your packing by packing items for holidays and seasonal items that will not be needed until after your move.
Secure your Valuables
Stock certificates, bonds, coin collections, stamp collections, cash, jewelry and other negotiable items are not accepted for shipment. Decide how you will safeguard them as you transport them to your new home. If you make a trip to your new home prior to the move, we suggest you open a safe deposit box at that time and store such items there prior to the move so you won’t have to deal with them during the move itself.
Immediate Aid Items
Pack an Immediate Aid Box containing items that might be needed immediately upon arrival at your new destination. Package each group of items in a durable bag or box and label it clearly. Carry your items with you instead of loading it in the moving truck.
Write Up a Game Plan
Obviously there is a lot to do when moving. The best way to stay organized and on track, without forgetting anything, is to put together a written plan for everything you need to do and when it needs to be done.
Start Packing Early and Smart
Don't wait until the last minute to start packing. Begin with items you don't use every day, like seasonal clothing, books, and decorations. Label every box clearly with what's inside and which room it belongs in. This makes unpacking way easier and helps you stay organized during the crazy moving process.
Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect time to get rid of stuff you don't need. Go through every room and create three piles: keep, donate, and throw away. The less you move, the cheaper and easier your move will be. Donate good condition items to local charities, sell things online, or have a quick garage sale to make some extra cash.
Ask for Help and Stay Flexible
Moving is a big job, so don't try to do everything alone. Ask friends and family to help you pack or watch your kids or pets on moving day. If you're hiring movers, communicate clearly about your expectations and be prepared for small challenges. Things rarely go 100% perfectly during a move, so stay calm and flexible. A positive attitude can make the entire process much less stressful.

"I have nothing but praise for Poulos Moving Company. From the beginning, Steven clearly advised us of everything involved in an interstate move, answering all our questions and providing helpful suggestions. I had interviewed four different moving companies, chose Poulos, and I'm very glad we did. We planned and contracted our move in March, well in advance of our late July moving date. When loading day arrived, their excellent crew arrived and completed loading the truck in a professionally skilled and efficient manner. In a similar way they delivered our goods on schedule with a skilled crew in Pullman. They were friendly and helpful in a professional way. I'm happy to recommend them without hesitation and would be happy to work with them again." - William S.
